It all started whem my mom read this article about a guy who traded up from a giant paperclip to a house. Neither one of us is interested in driving around the country trying to trade things with people but we decided to have a competition that has similar (in a very loose way) rules.
How it works:
1 - Find a free item/items
2 - Sell at least one of those items
3 - Buy other item(s) with the profit from the original sale
4 - Sell those other items
Our competition isn't really what that guy did but since we both sell on ebay we modified it to be more ebay friendly and named it Freebay (this is actually a different thing but we are using it anyway). We are both highly competitive so this should keep us motivated. We had to add a few more rules to keep it fair since I sell full time and she only does it when she isn't at work but you can see those below. I tend to waste my evenings but this competition should get me listing more in the evenings (I really don't want to lose)!! We actually started our competition January 1st so I will do a few catch up posts to show what we've found and what we've sold. (Hint, VHS tapes feature strongly at first because we found three HUGE boxes of them on the side of the road).
Rules in more detail:
1 - We have to start out by selling a free item that did not come from a friend or family member
2 - We have to sell an item we got for free at least once a month (on a rolling month cycle so if something is sold the 15th something has to be sold by the 15th of the next month) and until that item is sold we can't purchase any new inventory with our money.
3 - Any selling platform can be used but the fees from the platform have to be deducted from the profit.
4 - I can only purchase/list items when my mom is not working. This means during the school year I can't source or list from 7-3:45. If I am already in the cities I can't source until 4:30 because that is how long it would take to drive there. During the summer I can do it whenever because my mom doesn't work in the summer. Hooray!
